Vitiligo & Tattooing (White Patches)

Over the past several centuries, tattooing has become more socially common , both as an art form and as a cosmetic procedure. Some people with vitiligo have also turned to tattoos as a way to cover their depigmented areas and specially this is popular in Pakistan where our studio remains active in ensuring he ability to cover vitiligo or white patches with tattoo ink of the similar colour, although its not always 100% but atleast it gives the cure.
Many people report feeling self-conscious in public because of the discoloration caused by the skin caused by the skin condition. As one patient asked, “I feel so uncomfortable now because of the people watching me, and I already had anxiety issues before this all started. Do you still do most of the things you used to as far going out?” this is a question we ask each of our patients.
This discomfort can cause people specially in Pakistan with vitiligo to stop doing activities that were previously part of their daily life. “I used to have to speak a lot,” one patient said
“Vitiligo in our society caused me to consider not speaking.” Another said, “ Vitiligo gives me anxiety to think of sharing intimate times with anyone new.” This so far is the biggest challenge you face.
Because of the anxiety and the society we live in, many people with vitiligo to stop doing activities that were previously part of their daily life. One patient says he has to explain and do a lot of talking because thinking of sharing intimate times with anyone new.
Because of this anxiety ,many people with vitiligo look for ways to conceal discolored spots or blend them with the rest of their skin using foundations but they take a lot of time along with agony plus they are super expensive and its not one time solution.
Covering vitiligo discoloration with makeup or tanner can help some people feel more secure, but it requires everyday effort and application. It can be tiresome and expensive, and it may not look natural. A new calss of medicines known as JAK inhibitors may be able to repigment skin as well.
Some people consider tattoos as a long lasting vitiligo treatment option. If you’re considering getting a tattoo, consider these facts and tips.
Tattooing to hide white spots
Traditional tattoos aren’t a great choice to eliminating lighter patches. First, it’s difficult to match tattoo ink exactly to your skin its not 100% but still does the jobs requires several sittings In addition, skin changes color over time because of things like sun exposure and age. Your tattoo might not match the surrounding skin as your skin changes.
Another disadvantage of tradional tattoos is that if the vitiligo spot underneath the tattoo grows, you’ll be left with a ring of pale skin around the tattoo.
Micro pigmentation to Cover White/Vitiligo Patches.
If you’d like to try a semi permanent procedure to cover up lighter patches micropigmentation also called permanent makeup or cosmetic tattooing – might be a better choice. Micropigmentation is similar to tattoing, but unlike tattoo it usually done with a small tattoo pen instead of a large tattoo machine. This lets the technician apply fine details to ensure quality. Also , iron oxide pigments are used to mimic skin’s natural colors.
Micropigmentation pigments aren’t placed as deep into the skin’s layers as tattoo ink is. Therefore, they don’t last as long, with most treatments disappearing with one year. If youd like to try micropigmentation treatment for your vitiligo, look for a cosmetic technician with experience working with clients – at our studio you are more than welcome to book a consultation regarding tattooing to develop the closest match to your existing skin tone.
Getting a tattoo on your vitiligo
You might consider a tattoo that isn’t meant to disguise areas of the white skin, but is simply an art tattoo. Getting a tattoo of your own design can restore your confidence in your skin. Your tattoo art can even incorporate your vitiligo patches for a striking look.
Before you decide to any tattoo, remember that people with vitiligo are prone to developing vitiligo spots anywhere that they experience trauma to the skin. This process is called the Koebner phenomenon. If you have active vitiligo, the skin trauma caused by the tattoo needle might trigger or enlarge an existing vitiligo spot or cause you to develop new patches in the area of your tattoo. If you regret your tattoo, tattoo laser removal will cause skin trauma , increasing skin depigmentation.

What Is Vitiligo? Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment through tattoo

Everyone is beautiful and its natural at times to be with the things given by God.

Vitiligo is the result of the skin’s melanocytes (the cells responsible for giving the skin color) being destroyed. In can occur in anyone, but it tends to be most noticeable in people with darker skin because the contrast is more pronounced.

Signs and Symptoms of Vitiligo

The biggest sign that someone may have vitiligo is the appearance of light or “depigmented” spots on the skin, says Suzanne Friedler, MD, a dermatologist in private practice in New York City. The pale patches are areas with little or no melanin, the skin’s natural pigment. These spots can show up anywhere on the body, though they may first appear in areas that receive a lot of sun exposure, such as on the face, arms, feet, and hands. (3,4,5) It’s also not uncommon for white areas to appear in the groin, armpits, and around the belly button. (3,5)

Other signs of vitiligo can include: (1,4,5)

  • Hair turning prematurely gray or white
  • Eyelashes or eyebrows losing color and turning white
  • Change of color in the retina of the eye, per a study published in the November–December 2019 issue of the Indian Dermatology Online Journal (6)
  • Color loss in the nose and mouth
  • Inflammation of the ears or eyes, leading to hearing loss and vision problems (4,5)

Where skin spots appear, how widespread the condition becomes, and how much it will progress vary from person to person.

There are two major types of vitiligo:

  • Nonsegmental Vitiligo The most common type of vitiligo, with pale skin patches usually appearing on both sides of the body. The first signs may show up on hands, fingertips, wrists, around the eyes or mouth, or on the feet. Nonsegmental vitiligo is also called bilateral or generalized vitiligo or vitiligo vulgaris, according to an article published in September 2016 in F1000 Research. (7) Nonsegmental vitiligo is divided into subtypes based on the way the condition presents itself. These include acrofacial vitiligo, which appears on the face, hands, and feet; mucosal vitiligo, which affects the mucus membranes of the mouth, nose, and genitals; localized or focal vitiligo, which occurs on just a few areas of the body; and universal vitiligo, which may involve 80 to 90 percent of an affected person’s skin. (3, 5)
  • Segmental Vitiligo For this type, white patches often appear on just one side of the body, such as one arm or one leg instead of both. Loss of hair color is common. Segmented vitiligo can begin early in life. It may spread rapidly for six months to two years, then stop progressing. In rare cases, this form of vitiligo may become active again years later. (3,8) About 5 to 16 percent of vitiligo cases are segmental vitiligo. (3)

You may also have mixed vitiligo, a combination of nonsegmental and segmental vitiligo.

importantly, vitiligo can cause significant psychological distress. Many people with vitiligo struggle with self-esteem, confidence, and social anxiety, especially if the vitiligo affects areas of the skin that are tough to hide under clothes or minimize with cosmetics, notes the NHS.
“Vitiligo can have a significant effect on patients,” says , clinical assistant professor of dermatology and director of medical and cosmetic dermatology at Stony Brook Medicine in Commack, New York. “Patients can be very self-conscious and even experience depression.”
